The Grapevine Wellbeing Centre is the leading mental health charity in Buxton
Visiting us with accessibility requirements
We are proud to have supported adults across the High Peak area and further afield since 2003. No referral is needed to use our services, and the majority of them are free of charge.
Visually impaired
Our bathroom is painted in high contrast colours. A white line midway up the wall guides the way from the door to the toilet, to the sink, and then to the hand dryer. We also have a contrasting dark wood toilet seat against the white of the toilet.
Physical accessibility
Once inside the centre, there are no raised thresholds. We have large push plates to open the front door and the door to the Centre. The bathroom is large and has an accessible toilet, with grab rails. All the doors are wide enough for a slimline electric wheelchair to access.
Neurodivergent
Our main room has low-level lights, calming colours on the walls and a separate quiet area, where people can sit and not be disturbed. We do put overhead lights on for certain activities such as Art group, Creative Writing, but a warning is always given beforehand.
Everyone is welcome
We are open to any adult who wants to attend. We are a safe space with a strict code of conduct; no sexist, homophobic, transphobic, misogynistic or other discriminatory language is allowed. A copy of our code of conduct can be found here. We are also proud to be a recognised Trans Safe Space.
Visiting the Grapevine
The Grapevine Wellbeing Centre offers a safe, non-judgemental, supportive space for anyone struggling with their mental health or wellbeing. It is a free, open-door service; no one has to wait for a referral or diagnosis, and support is not time-limited. As well as drop-in support, it offers regular social, creative and nature-based group activities either within the Centre or in the wider community More recently, it has developed a programme of talks on a range of themes relating to mental health and wellbeing, and widened its offer to include weekend and evening activities.

Arriving at Grapevine Wellbeing Centre, people’s first impressions are positive (often contrasting with their preconceptions of who Grapevine was for and what it would be like):
The space itself, and the environment within it, were important to people’s feeling of safety and belonging. It does not feel like a clinical or institutional setting:
There is a small step entering the building, leading into a seated waiting room. If there is an evening event or workshop already taking place, you may have to wait whilst our team become available. There is another door leading into the main room, with seating, tables and wheelchair accessible toilets.
Facilities and what to expect
We have a seated waiting room and a main room with various seats, sofas, tables and furniture to make yourself comfortable. We can always provide warm and cold drinks. We have a wheelchair-accessible unisex toilet. Lamps and fairy lights provide a warm ambience which is dimmed and brightened to suit the specific activity taking place. Plants, lovely colours and artwork finish the decorative environment.
People talked about the atmosphere fostered within the Centre, and how this made them feel:

Where are you located?
If I work or have caring responsibilities, can I come to the Centre?
Our weekend and Evening Grapevine are run at times outside of normal working hours, specifically for anyone who can’t get to us in the daytime. As we can’t run as many out-of-hour sessions, we ringfence these for people who work or are of working age who have caring responsibilities.
Do I need to bring anything with me to the daytime groups?
